The Larry Dye Scholarship was created by Lee James and Mick Marshall to honor Larry’s legacy after his passing in 2022. During his life, Larry was dedicated to serving his hometown of Cuba, NY — perhaps most notably as a 50-year member of the Cuba Fire Department. His contributions to the community were recognized through several honors, such as Fireman of the Year in 1981.
The Larry Dye Scholarship provides financial support for students planning to enter careers in emergency services or fire safety. The scholarship can also be awarded to students planning to pursue other careers that were active EMT/VFD volunteers during their school years. Because Larry was a graduate of Cuba Central School, priority is given to Cuba-Rushford students.
By helping young adults who are interested in being firefighters/EMTs, this scholarship aims to foster more involvement in Allegany County’s rural fire departments.
Larry also served as a member and president of the Cuba Chamber of Commerce. He won the Community Service Award in 1971 and Man of the Year in 1983.
Larry is remembered as outgoing, positive, kind, incredibly organized and civically minded. He was a natural storyteller, and he loved his hometown of Cuba and the generous spirit of the community.
