The Fund for the Andover Free Library was established in 2018 by Robert (Bob) Grossman. This designated fund provides ongoing financial support for the library’s operations and programming.
As a native of Andover, New York, Bob spent much of his early life at the Andover Free Library, particularly during his years studying ceramic engineering at Alfred University. His deep appreciation for the library was shaped in part by his close friendship with longtime librarian Rema Baker.
“I visited her weekly during all my college years,” Bob said. “Rema had me culling books in the library for many months, and I became very knowledgeable about the library.”
After graduating from college, Bob went on to serve in the U.S. Army for 21 years. His distinguished military career included two tours in Vietnam, a two-year tour in Korea, and several years in Washington, D.C. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel and received multiple military honors for his service. After retiring from the military, Bob enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry.
Although Bob never moved back to his hometown, he established this endowed fund prior to his passing in 2025 as a lasting way to give back to the Andover Free Library and the community that shaped him.
