Edward Brewster Scholarship
By Alyssa Bump • March 27, 2026
Established in 2007, this scholarship honors Edward and Pauline Brewster’s legacy by supporting students from the Whitesville community pursuing higher education.
Created through a bequest in the will of Pauline Brewster in honor of her husband, Edward Brewster, this scholarship continues a legacy rooted in education, hard work, and care for the Whitesville community.
Edward and Pauline Brewster
Edward Brewster devoted 31 years to Whitesville Central School as an educator and administrator. A 1939 graduate of St. Bonaventure University, he served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator from 1941 to 1946 during World War II. After returning home, he began teaching English and history at Whitesville Central School in 1946 and later became principal in 1954.
Known affectionately by students as “Mr. B” and the “Gentle Giant,” Edward was a calm and steady presence in the school community. He was widely respected for his quiet leadership, strong values, and deep care for his students. Whether in the classroom or the hallway, he took pride in encouraging students to work hard, pursue their goals, and grow into responsible members of their communities.
“Mr. Brewster will always be remembered for his humor and positive outlook on life,” Whitesville students noted in the 1977 edition of The Wycenian, marking his retirement and the lasting impression he made on generations of students.
Pauline Brewster also dedicated her life to education. She studied at Geneseo and taught in a one-room schoolhouse on Shovel Hollow Road before later teaching sixth grade in Wellsville at the Washington Street School. Together, Edward and Pauline left a lasting mark on the lives of young people in Allegany County.
Established in 2007, the Edward Brewster Scholarship was created to support Whitesville graduates pursing higher education at a university or technical school. Today, the fund provides scholarships for Andover Central School graduates who reside in the former Whitesville School District. Recipients must demonstrate a strong work ethic and financial need.
This update reflects the recent decision to send Whitesville secondary students to Andover in 2025. The scholarship now continues its purpose by supporting students from the Whitesville District as they graduate from Andover.
