The Kane Family Scholarship was established in 2016 by longtime Belmont/Genesee Valley teacher James M. Kane. This scholarship honors his parents, Helen B. Kane and James T. Kane — two individuals who deeply believed in the power of a college education.

Helen devoted 27 years to teaching elementary students, and James T. built a 45-year career in banking. Together, they modeled hard work, perseverance, and lifelong learning — values they instilled in their son.

The Kane Family Scholarship supports motivated Genesee Valley Central School high school seniors and graduates pursuing a degree in finance or education. Preference is given to students who demonstrate strong academic performance and an outstanding work ethic.

“My parents knew, demonstrated, and stressed the value of a good college education,” Mr. Kane said. “I hope this scholarship will make it a little easier for a highly motivated, hard-working graduate to achieve [a] college degree and [the] job of their dreams.”

Mr. Kane retired from teaching in 2000 after a 30-year career in education, including one year as an algebra teacher at Corning-Painted Post School District and 29 years as a junior high mathematics teacher at Belmont/Genesee Valley Central School.

“One thing that I absolutely enjoy is getting a note from [scholarship] recipients,” Mr. Kane said. “[It is wonderful to receive] a little information on [recipients] and their hopes for their future.”

The Kane Family’s legacy of encouragement, dedication, and belief in education continues to open doors for the next generation.
