Four-time Belva Waite Memorial Scholarship recipient Ryan Dennis reflects on growing up in rural Allegany County, NY, the impact of ACAF scholarships, and the inspiration behind his latest book.

Four-time Belva A. Waite Memorial Scholarship recipient Ryan Dennis recently met with Alyssa Bump from the Allegany County Area Foundation (ACAF) to discuss his newest book, Barn Gothic: Three Generations and the Death of the Family Dairy Farm, and reflect on the lasting influence of his Allegany County roots.


Growing up on a family farm in Canaseraga, New York during the 1990s, Ryan developed a deep connection to rural life — a connection that continues to shape his writing today.


During this interview, he shares how ACAF scholarships helped support his educational journey, how rural communities continue to inspire his work, and what motivated him to write Barn Gothic.
