Hydramec Fund for the Scio Memorial Library

The Hydramec Fund provides annual financial support to the Scio Memorial Library's programs, collections, and services.

Even after its doors closed in 2015, Hydramec, Inc. continues to make an impact in the Scio community.


The Hydramec, Inc. manufacturing firm in Scio, New York specialized in zinc plating and metal fabrication. Opening in 1970, Hydramec maintained a strong presence in the community for 45 years.


"Despite ceasing operations, the company's legacy endure through the Hydramec Fund, established in 1989 by the Shear Family," Scio Library Director Raeanne Smith said.


The fund was originally established to "promote free public library services throughout the Scio community." Today, over three decades later, this designated fund continues to provides ongoing support to the Scio Memorial Library. 


Serving a population of just over 2,100 residents, the Scio Memorial Library has been a cornerstone of the community for more than a century.


"This fund continues to provide annual financial assistance to the Scio Memorial Library, supporting various needs such as building maintenance, programming, collection development, and operational costs," Smith said.


Today, the library continues to evolve alongside community needs. Its collection includes more than 42,000 items, with over 24,000 eBooks accessible through the Southern Tier Library System. The Scio Library also organizes over 150 programs. These programs engage children, young adults, and adults in a variety of activities.


The Hydramec Fund is a powerful example of how local businesses can create lasting change beyond their years of operation through establishing endowed funds.
