Allegany County Area Foundation Makes Grant to the Baker’s Bridge Historical Association
Belmont, NY – November 29, 2009 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the Baker’s Bridge Historical Association for $500.
 
     The Foundation’s grant of $500 will help with collections storage. The Baker’s Bridge Historical Association (founded 1976) is responsible for the collecting and preserving of artifacts and objects relating to the history of the Alfred Station area. It is headquartered in the original church building built by the Alfred Station Seventh Day Baptists. The BBHA has a growing collection of photographs, papers, books, clothing, household items, and business, farm and railroad equipment. The collection presently is in a vulnerable, cluttered and jammed state which, if left unaddressed, would constitute a severe loss for the community if it was lost or damaged
.
      The grant will provide funding to enable the association to purchase adequate shelving units and storage materials. With a properly equipped storage area, the collection will be safe, accessible and usable, as well as preserved for future generations. The Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to offer this assistance.
 
Allegany County Area Foundation Makes Grant to the Whitesville Big Brothers Big Sisters Program
Belmont, NY – November 19, 2009 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the Whitesville Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program for $500.
 
The Foundation’s grant of $500 will help with the resources needed to provide supervised site-based mentoring to youth in need of a positive role model in the Whitesville area. Through weekly interactions, the program offers opportunities to participate in fun activities that focus on four areas: to build character, to learn to believe in oneself, to experience nature and to complete community service projects. Whitesville high school students will serve as mentors in a program that has proven to be beneficial to the teenagers as well as their younger counterparts. Big Brothers Big Sisters has become a valued asset to the school, with a great degree of teacher and faculty support. The grant will provide for the purchase of books, games and exercise equipment that will allow the children to express themselves, learn more about themselves, develop character and integrity, work together as a team and build their relationship with their mentor. The children will also complete two important community service projects that will beautify Whitesville and help sick and injured children confined to local hospitals. The Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to offer this assistance.
 
 
 
 
 
Belmont, NY April 20, 2009 -Grant Opportunities are limted due to current financial market conditions.
 
The current financial market conditions and existing laws in the State of New York have limited the grant making opportunities of the Foundation.
 
Grants, both scholarship and general, are being limited in the new fiscal year, beginning May 1st. A few new scholarships will be awarded in 2009 and, when available, general grants will be in small amounts of around $500 per approved application.
 
The Foundation is making every effort to honor all renewable scholarships at a reduced rate and to increase funding to make more grants available in the future.

Belmont, NY – March 31, 2009 – Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce the presentation of a $450 grant for the Whitesville Public Library “Creating a Kid Friendlier Library” project.
 
The grant will help fund a more inviting space for reading hours and summer programs. This funding will ensure that next summer’s reading program can accommodate all or most children that the library expects to attend. The purchase of additional furniture will be a step toward achieving the goals of the project.

Allegany County Area Foundation Board of Directors has awarded a grant in the amount of $450 for the Music on the Lawn Wellsville program.
 
Belmont, NY – March 10, 2009 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $450 grant for the Music on the Lawn Program in Wellsville. The grant will help fund the purchase of materials for the Adirondack Chair Project, a one-time fund-raising effort to help insure the continuance of this musical event. These annual free summer concert series (June through August) is held on the David A. Howe Library lawn and benefits many residents from the county.

Allegany County Area Foundation Board has approved the disbursement of $3500 from the Conrad & Kathryn Church Landscaping Fund

Belmont, NY – February 11, 2009 – The Allegany County Area Foundation, (a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York,) is pleased to announce a grant to the village of Andover from the Conrad and Kathryn Church Landscaping Fund.
 
     In 2001, the Village of Andover received a gift of some 400 trees of various species from Conrad and Kathryn Church. Mr. Church, who passed away the following year, hoped to restore the canopy of trees he recalled from his boyhood in the village. As the former owner of Genesee Valley Nurseries, Inc. in Belmont, he had made his living by growing and selling trees, and he saw them as an important part of the community’s landscape.
 
     The grant of $3500 will be used to fund forestry and natural resource consultants as part of Andover’s effort to maintain the trees and beautify the village. Gloria Kahl, Village Trustee, said, “We are grateful for the love and care shown by Conrad and Kathryn Church, and we thank them that future generations will share in the beauty of this gift.”
.
     In 2007, a gift of $100,000 from Mrs. Church to the Allegany County Area Foundation, Inc., the Conrad and Kathryn Church Landscaping Fund was established for the purpose of maintaining Andover’s trees. The village will be able to draw upon the fund’s earnings for tasks such as pruning, fertilizing, disease control and evaluation by an arborist.

25th Anniversary Grant

On September 18, 2008 the Foundation awarded a special 25th Aniversary Grant to the CORE (Creating Opportunities for Rural Education) program sponsored by the Literacy Volunteers of Allegany County.

The goal of the program is to facilitate an inmstitutionally neutral interdependent collaboration of educators, human service providers, employment and training personnel, and other professionals to provide cooperative efforts resulting in systematic and environmental changes addressing the issues of low literacy rates, access to educational services and lack of workplace skills.

2008/09 Grants

Allegany County Area Foundation Board of Directors has awarded a grant in the amount of $599 to the Art for Rural America.
Belmont, NY – October 15, 2008 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $599 grant to the Art for Rural America. The grant will fund the “Time Travelers: Reading and Creating” program in cooperation with the Wellsville Creative Arts Center and the David A. Howe Library. The program helps to develop basic and information literacy skills as well as an appreciation for hands-on creative arts. Children, ages 6-11 will participate in a storytelling program followed by a creation of art and cooking. The program is designed to stimulate the use of critical thinking skills along with imaginative and mechanical skills.

The grant will help fund the purchase of a display rack and book shelves for the library. The display rack/shelving will provide a better presentation of and access to library materials.

The grant will fund the “A Wellsville Historical Landmark Coloring Book” initiative which will become a vehicle to introducing students to the history of Wellsville. The coloring books will be used during visits to classrooms, field trips to the museum and other museum events.

Allegany County Area Foundation Board of Directors has awarded a grant in the amount of $500 to the Allegany ARC After School Program.

Belmont, NY – August 25, 2008 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $500 grant to the Allegany ARC After School Program. The grant will help fund the after school program that benefits special needs children and their siblings. The After School Program provides supervised activities, help with homework and other school related projects. The program offers a safe and positive environment for up to thirty children.

 

Allegany County Area Foundation Board of Directors has awarded a grant in the amount of $700 to the Alfred Box of Books Library.

 

– July 16, 2008 –
Allegany County Area Foundation, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $700 grant to the Alfred Box of Books Library. The grant will help fund the “Shelving for Growth” initiative which includes additional shelving, displays of materials, and a more comfortable space for small community groups. The new shelving will allow youngsters to safely reach books on their own, and will relieve an overcrowded area in order to clear table tops for more appropriate activities.

Allegany County Area Foundation Board of Directors has awarded a grant in the amount of $575 to the Wilderness Adventures (STEP) Program.
 
Belmont, NY – August 17, 2008 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $575 grant to the Wilderness Adventures STEP program. The grant will directly benefit local middle and high school students by supplying backpacks for this program, costing $115 each.
 
The summer STEP program was started in the late 1980’s  with a goal of challenging students from Allegany County to push themselves physically, while at the same time learning  problem solving techniques, conflict resolution, teamwork and the setting of goals.

Allegany County Area Foundation Board of Directors has awarded a grant in the amount of $500 to the Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair.
 
Belmont, NY – July 10, 2008 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $500 grant to the Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair. The grant will help fund the TRSEF “Why Wait?” precollegiate science experience fair for youth in Western New York. The Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair seeks to engage students in grades 5-12 in science, technology, engineering and Mathematics (STEM) experiences.
 
Western New York and the U.S. face a STEM workforce shortage. The fair will address these needs by encouraging students to do their own science fair research or engineering project with an opportunity in March of 2009 to present their work to judges committed to STEM experiences for youth. The Foundation grant will assist the TRSEF in promoting the fair in Allegany County.

2007/2008 Grants
Allegany County Area Foundation Announces Grant to the Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce for $900.
 
 – June 2, 2008 –
     Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to award a grant of $900 to assist the new county Chamber of Commerce with start-up costs. The foundation remembers the importance of others who reach out to assist new organizations, because the same help was given to the foundation twenty-five years ago. The Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce, founded in December, 2007 will provide a countywide voice for businesses and their employees. Membership includes all members of existing local chambers and business associations. Response to the formation of a Greater Allegany County Chamber of Commerce has been met with tremendous enthusiasm. The Foundation is pleased to welcome the new County Chamber offices to the Crossroads Commerce and Conference Center in Belmont, NY, where the Foundation recently established its’ own office.

Allegany County Area Foundation Announces Grant to the Allegany County Chapter American Red Cross of $600

Belmont, NY – March 6, 2008 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the Allegany County Chapter American Red Cross for $600.
 
     Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce a grant of $600 to the local chapter of the American Red Cross for the purchase of CPR Training Manikins. Through the Health and Safety section of the American Red Cross numerous people in the community have access to learn lifesaving skills such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). CPR/AED manikins are also referred to as Adult Nannies and are used to supplement the workbook information. These funds will be used to purchase an additional 4-pack of manikins that will allow the Red Cross to provide more services to more organizations.

This grant was made possible through an annonymous gift received by the Foundation and designated for the Cuba Circulating Library. According to Cynthia Dutton, Director of the Cuba Circulating Library, the funds will be added to the library endowment fund and will provide needed income to support the library program for years to come.

Belmont, NY - February 21, 2008 - Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit community organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a $450 grant to the Partners in Prevention for Allegany County. The grant will help to fund the 2nd Annual Juied Art Show in celebration of the National Entrepreneur's Week on February 28, 2008. This year's theme for the Juried Art Show is "Family and Community". Art students in grades 9-12 will compete in several different categories highlighting the theme. There are six school districts participating, Belfast, Cuba-Rushford, Genesee Valley, Scio, Wellsville and Whitesville.

Allegany County Area Foundation Announces Grant of $4,000 to the Cuba Historical Society

 
Belmont, NY – January 15, 2008 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the Cuba Historical Society for $4,000. This grant is made possible due to an anonymous gift to the Foundation designated for the Cuba Historical Society.
 
     The “biggest little museum in Allegany County”, so claims Jack Nease of the Historical Society, will use the grant for their general operating expenses. These include operating a museum and information center and offering help to the extended community in genealogy research and other historical matters. This grant will enable the Historical Society to further its contribution to the community and to promote education and historical research here in Allegany County. The Foundation is pleased to support this organization.

Allegany County Area Foundation Makes Grant to the Youth Compeer Program

 
Belmont, NY – November 12, 2007 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the Youth Compeer Program for $500.
 
The Foundation’s grant of $500 will provide the resources to provide a field trip to the Rochester Seneca Zoo for the children in the program who have shown progress while being affiliated with the Compeer Program. The Youth Compeer program uses mentors to assist children and youth in developing appropriate social skills, exposure to recreational outings that they might not otherwise have, and to give their families respite.
 
The Youth Compeer Program is operated under the auspices of the Allegany County Mental Health Association and is the only social-recreational program in Allegany County that benefits emotionally disabled children.
 
The Allegany County Area Foundation welcomes tax-deductible gifts in any amount, including memorials to friends and loved ones. County residents are encouraged to remember the Foundation in their wills by making a specific bequest. In the 2006 fiscal year the Foundation awarded over $163,000 in grants, including 100 scholarships to county students and grants to local not-for-profit agencies that benefited all residents of Allegany County.

Allegany County Area Foundation Announces Annual Distribution to the SPCA Serving Allegany County of $557.57
 
Belmont, NY – October 25, 2007 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce the presentation of a check to the SPCA Serving Allegany County for $557.57.
 
     Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to present a check of $557.57 that represents the annual earnings distribution from the SPCA Serving Allegany County Endowment Fund, held by the Foundation on behalf of the SPCA. The SPCA is able to count on a yearly earnings check to provide for their expenses. The SPCA Endowment Fund, established by concerned and caring citizens of Allegany County, is an example of the many varied endowment funds held by the Foundation. Other funds benefiting county residents include the Cuba Memorial Hospital, Scio Memorial Library, Andover Free Library and the Village of Andover Landscaping. 
 
     The SPCA fund and others are accepting additional contributions to increase the impact these organizations can have in our community. New endowment funds may be established to help other not-for-profit agencies. The Foundation is pleased to support beneficial programs throughout the county.

Allegany County Area Foundation Announces Grant to the Home Care & Hospice of Western, NY of $500
 
Belmont, NY – August 31, 2007 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the Home Care & Hospice for $500.
 
     Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce a grant of $500 for the development and implementation of an electronic medical record system for all of the clinical staff: nurses, social workers, spiritual care providers and scheduler in Allegany County. The project will allow nurses, social workers and other clinicians to have instant access to their patients’ records. This is of particular importance after normal business hours. In hospice’s multi-disciplinary approach, social workers, spiritual care and bereavement coordinators play a vital role in developing a plan of care that meets all of a terminally ill patient’s needs. The Foundation is pleased to support this program.

Allegany County Area Foundation Announces Grant to the AlleCatt Reads Program of $400
 
Belmont, NY – July 23, 2007 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to the AlleCatt Reads Program for $400.
     Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce a grant of $400 for the encouragement of reading by all ages in Allegany County. The community-wide read of the book entitled The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman, will take place this fall. The book highlights the impact of globalization on individuals, companies, communities and countries.
 
     The program will include a discussion of the book in both counties, including participation by public schools, public libraries and both Houghton College and St. Bonaventure University. Activities will include a Global Studies II (10th Grade) Poster Contest to help students understand the impact of globalization and to learn more about other societies, cultures, governments and economic systems. The posters will be displayed throughout both counties. The Foundation is pleased to support this program.

Belmont, NY - April 27, 2007 - Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to announce a grant to the Camp Harley Sutton in Alfred of $450 for new equipment.
 
The Foundation grant will provide equipment for the new kitchenette at Camp Harley. The retreat center, which is part of a larger camp facility, is available for public use and is often used by Allegany County residents and organizations for meetings, reunions, seminars and weekend retreats. The new facility will provide year-round facilities. When completed, this facility will be another fine asset for the people of Allegany County.

 Royal Family Kid's Camp

              The Foundation’s grant of $500 will provide the resources to allow two camper scholarships for the Royal Family Kids’ Camp to be held in July of 2007. Those children receiving scholarships will include young people from challenging family situations. These children will have an opportunity to enjoy an experience that offers them a week of positive memories. Royal Family Kids’ Camp also offers a week of respite for foster parents and other guardians. The camp is run entirely by local volunteers and has one counselor for every two campers. Financial support comes from many local organizations and individuals and the Allegany County Area Foundation is pleased to offer this assistance.

Allegany County Area Foundation Makes Grant to the Belfast Public Library

Belmont, NY – June 13, 2006 – Allegany County Area Foundation, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to encourage educational, social, cultural and civic projects benefiting the residents of Allegany County, New York, is pleased to announce a grant to The Belfast Public Library of Belmont, NY for $500. The Foundation’s grant of $500 will help provide the resources to construct additional bookcases for the children’s library. The present juvenile fiction room is in need of new bookcases. During the past year, the children of Belfast borrowed 2600 books and the library offers these services to the children in conjunction with the public school teachers. The library provides a valuable service to the community. The Allegany County Area Foundation welcomes tax-deductible gifts in any amount, including memorials to friends and loved ones. County residents are encouraged to remember the Foundation in their wills by making a specific bequest. In the 2005 fiscal year the Foundation awarded over $155,000 in grants, including over 100 scholarships to county students and grants to local not-for-profit agencies that benefited all residents of Allegany County.

Grant made to the Belfast Public Library

Youth Court

            The Foundation supports the Youth Court, and a grant of $500 was given, enabling six youths and their sponsors to attend a training conference held in Albany. 
 
Houghton College Urban/Rural Teacher Corps 
 
            The Foundation grant of $2,400 provided funding for two student teachers working in selected Allegany County "high need school districts".
 

Genesee Valley Outdoor Education Center

            The Foundation grant of $1,000 will provide the monies to establish at least two learning stations on the sight, one of which will be located at the main entrance. A "learning station" is a location on site that is dedicated to a particular eduational focus, such as the site's biodiversity and natural resources.

 GVCS Alternative Education Program  

            The Foundation's grant of $1,500 provides the funds to enable this program to equip students with employability skills, career awareness and the framework to make mature decisions about future education and employment.
            Bill Horton developed the program to provide work situations in order to develop positive self-esteem, respect for others, independence and personal excellence.

Allegany County Bi-Centennial Committee  

 The Foundation was pleased to support the Bi-Centennial celebrations by providing a gift of $1,000  to complete the mounting of the time capsule. The time capsule is vital to the success of the preservation of educational and historical artifacts and will benefit the residents of the future.

Youth Compeer Program 

            The Foundation was pleased to present a grant of $500 to the Youth Compeer Program which uses mentors to assist children and youth in developing appropriate social skills, in having exposure to recreational outings that they might not otherwise have, and in giving their families respite.

            The Foundation grant will make possible a field trip for the children who have shown progress while being affiliated with the Compeer Program.

Belfast Public Library "Pied Piper Project"                              $300

    In Belfast, after the summer lawn concerts, the musicians lead the community to the library, like Pied Pipers!  In the library the people are challenged to avail themselves of the library resources.  The Foundation is delighted to support this project.

    In support of the American Red Cross, President Leslie J. Haggstrom of the Foundation made this donation to Mr. Douglas W. Milliken of Americorps*VISTA.  The money will be used to provide all county schools with a Master of Disaster curriculum kit.  These kits will more adequately prepare county students to face the dangers of natural and man-made disasters.
 
Allegany County Association for the Blind                              $800
 
    The Foundation is pleased to present a grant of $800 to the Allegany County Association for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.  The money will be used to fund visual aids for the visually impaired of Allegany County.

Grant recipients are primarily public charitable organizations with 501c(3) tax status that serve Allegany County residents.  Grant applications may be obtained by writing to the Foundation at P.O. Box 58, Belmont, NY  14813.
